Pendragon House is located close to the heart of Glastonbury, 5 minutes from both the High Street and the bottom of the Tor, yet right on the edge of the countryside. The house has rooms and suites for residents and guests. We live together communally as family, sharing in one another’s lives; living here involves being prepared to work on the things that arise when living closely with others. We aim for low impact living and zero fossil fuel use, although we are not fanatical about it. Long-term community members mainly have outside jobs, pay into the not for profit community fund, and do not work at the community other than the normal house cleaning and everyday chores. We usually eat communally, and all take part in cooking or clearing up when necessary. Such work is currently organised on an ‘organic’ cooperative basis rather than with a formal schedule. The commune has a cat. Children may be home educated or may go to the local schools. We have a large meeting room and art studio that are used for everyday commune activity and events and workshops. The organic garden and orchard is maintained by volunteers, we often have wwoofers who look after light maintenance that arises through everyday activity and gardening; sometimes help out with children etc. We are omnivorous but there is a vegetarian fridge and vegetarians or vegans are catered for. We often cook huge organic apple pies with apples from our orchard, which we freeze and use year-round. We are 5 minutes’ walk from Glastonbury town centre, 10 minutes’ to the schools and ten minutes’ to the base of Glastonbury Tor. The town is an eclectic place with a lively music scene, alternative culture and tourism. We occasionally have concerts in our event room and our weekend ‘Dance Church’ with visiting DJs has been going every week since the beginning. During the pandemic when permitted we ran it outside in nearby Abbey Park. The house has 3 family size suites and several other rooms for individuals. There are wood burning stoves, a biomass boiler, a wood burning Aga, plus electric hob and oven in the kitchen and other electric necessities powered by a combination of Solar and grid. Big south facing windows let the sun do a lot of warming in winter. We have no gas connection or oil burner, and electricity is not used for heating. We are currently looking for individuals and also a family with ideally young to early teens children, but the most important thing is to be motivated for communal living. A long term goal is to transfer ownership of the house to a Trust.
